    題 目:Automatic Paper Pop-Up Design
    主講人:劉國霖教授
    服務單位:National University of Singapore

    內容摘要:

Origamic architecture (OA) is a kind of paper pop-up that enforced the restriction of using only a single piece of paper. Combining techniques from origami (paper folding) and kirigami (paper cutting), OA is a work of art and architecture. However, the designing of an OA is a tedious process that requires a lot of trial and error, even by experienced artists. A small miscalculation and the whole process has to be repeated again. A computerized system to aid in the design of OA will greatly benefit the creation of OA, cutting down on the need to do numerous trials before getting the right thing.

Being an art form that has only been created in the 1980s, OA has only been gaining the interest of the computing society in the 2000s. Therefore, little work has been done in this field. Previous work has attempted to create applications to aid the user in the design of the OA. They all share a common goal, which is to provide the user with an intuitive user interface to allow the user to design the OA step-by-step without the need to manually check for the pop-up validity. However, in all the applications, heavy user input is required to specify every part of the pop-up.

In this work, we explore methods to automatically generate OA pop-ups from ordinary 3D digital models of 3D objects. Such an application will benefit from requiring minimal user input, and allow the creation of OA pop-ups from large collections of existing 3D models. Our current approach uses depth map of the 3D model as input, and proceed to analyze the depth map to convert geometrical structures in the 3D object into OA features like folds, cuts, slices, etc. This is a work-in-progress and many problems and challenges still lie ahead.
